“The Last Supper” occupies the entire northern wall of the refectory in the Dominican convent of Santa Maria delle Grazie, a space where friars would gather to eat, pray, and meditate during meals. Since the 14th century, following the Tuscan tradition from which Leonardo drew inspiration, this type of room has commonly been referred to as the “Cenacolo.” From the early 16th century onward, this term also came to denote the pictorial representation of the Last Supper typically found in such settings.
